The Program

The Wildreader program is an effort to encourage young children to read books. The Wildreader grew out of the "Accelerated Reader" program in public schools. Wildlife Safari wanted to help motivate the students. Earning a certificate from Wildlife Safari, and receiving passes to the drive thru park turned out to be a great motivator. The success of the program is demonstrated by the support from the county library system in Douglas County, Oregon.

In the program, students earn points by reading books assigned by the librarian. A quiz is given to determine student knowledge, and points are determined based on that quiz. Some groups choose not to give a quiz. It is up to the librarian to determine the points, and how they are given. The librarian or teacher is in total control of how the program works for his or her own group of readers.

The system is secure. Librarians or teachers are able to register. They then add readers to their own list. These are the only readers they are able to see on the site. Points and progress of each reader is maintained on the site. A personalized bookmark can be downloaded and given to the student.

Once 60 points are achieved, the librarian/teacher is then able to print out a certificate for that student. The certificate shows the student's name, the librarian's/teacher's name and the points earned along with the date.

It is recommended that the librarian/teacher allow students to check their progress on the site. A bar chart automatically updates to show how close the student is getting to the target point score.
